MAIRI'S WEDDING

Mary McNiven's friend Johnny Bannerman wrote Mairi's Wedding (aka "Marie's Wedding" and the "Lewis Bridal Song") in 1934 using a traditional Scots tune, and it was first played for her at the Old Highlanders Institute in Glasgow's Elmbank Street. Sir Hugh S. Robertson translated the Scottish Gaelic language into English a year later. It was specifically written for the wedding of Miss McNiven to Skye-born sea captain John Campbell, although the ceremony didn't take place for another 6 years! The bride lived into her nineties and is reported as being amazed by the song's popularity. "Mairi's Wedding" has been recorded by Kenneth McKellar, The Clancy Brothers, The Chieftains with Van Morrison, The Kings Singers and others. The Rankin Family took it to number one in Canada. Needless to say it is popular in weddings with a Scottish theme.

WEDDINGS
and Receptions

Celebrate your wedding in style!

For centuries bagpipers have played for weddings in Scotland, Ireland and throughout Europe. Elegant and stately, the instrument heralds the marriage ceremony with music that speaks to heritage and tradition as few other instruments can. Make your special day memorable with the powerful, stirring sound of the Great Highland Pipes.

Legend of the Scotch Thistle

National Flower of Scotland
Legend tells of a Viking invasion long ago. As the Vikings approached a Scottish castle under cover of night, they stepped into a field of thistle in their bare feet and yelled out in pain. Their cries awoke the soldiers encamped outside the castle and the attack was thwarted. Since then, thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland.

SERVICES OFFERED

The following describes the services I offer when you contract with me to play for your wedding.

Consultation Session
We can meet at the piano or organ to audition pieces from my repertoire. If this is not convenient, you may elect to listen to recordings and let me know your favorite pieces by phone or email. Some people even say, "I'll just leave it up to you." Plus there are a couple dozen sound samples on the Repertoire page (link below).

Pre-service music for the 20-30 minutes prior to the service may be chosen, including music for seating the mothers. Congregational hymns, solos, or special pieces may also be auditioned during the consultation.

The couple can greatly assist the process by listening to recordings prior to the consultation to identify the style of music which most appeals to their tastes. Specific composers and names of works will greatly aid planning and make the consultation period more productive. Note: the piper does not attend consultations.

You may bring sheet music of favorite songs, tapes, or programs from other weddings at this time. Sheet music to specially requested songs must be purchased and supplied to the organist at least two weeks prior to the ceremony, and will remain the property of the bride and groom. Discretion should be used when requesting love songs and other secular music, keeping in mind the sacramental nature of the ceremony. Your minister can offer guidance on this subject as well. Rules defining restrictions vary from church to church, so ultimately these decisions should be made in conjunction with the officiating minister.

The Rehearsal
Please plan the walk-through of the bridesmaids' processional, bridal march, and recessional at the beginning of the rehearsal. The organist and piper are generally not needed for the remainder of activities that take place.
